Can Ulkay directed the drama film “Ayla: The Daughter of War” in 2017, which was a collaboration between South Korea and Turkey. The film was submitted as Turkey’s official selection for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 90th Academy Awards, but unfortunately, it did not receive a nomination.
Storyline: In the midst of the Korean War in 1950, Sergeant Süleyman discovers a small girl who is half-frozen and without parents or any assistance nearby. The little girl is frantic, scared, and near death, but Süleyman is deeply moved by her and decides to risk his own life to rescue her. He smuggles her into his Army base to protect her from harm.
